Which FAI places to visit in Campania

The FAI places to see in Campania
Basilica of Santa Maria della Sanità, Naples
It is located in the heart of the historic Rione Sanità and is known by the Neapolitans as San Vincenzo ‘or Munacone since the statue of San Vincenzo Ferreri is kept inside. Tradition associates this statue with a miraculous event that took place in 1836, when, immediately after the traditional procession, the city saw the end of the cholera epidemic that afflicted it.
The basilica, built between 1602 and 1610, is considered one of the most representative works of Neapolitan Baroque and bears the signature of the Dominican architect Fra ‘Nuvolo. Majestic in structure, this religious building is famous for its splendid dome decorated with yellow and green tiles. Inside it is possible to admire the oldest representation of the Madonna present in Naples. This ancient church also stands on an early Christian basilica, today incorporated by the raised presbytery which gives access to the catacombs of San Gaudioso.
Bay of Ieranto, Massa Lubrense (NA)
The Bay of Ieranto, inside the protected marine area of Punta Campanella, is part of the main tourist itineraries between the Amalfi Coast and the Sorrento Coast and was donated to the FAI with the aim of protecting it from possible building and industrial speculations and to guarantee territorial protection. With its 1,500 hectares and 40 km of coastline, this spectacular cove extends between the provinces of Naples and Salerno and is a real naturalistic paradise: its marine and botanical biodiversity have made it the ideal destination for nature lovers who here they can enjoy long walks in the Mediterranean scrub and devote themselves to snorkeling and bird watching.
Villa Cortchacow, Sorrento
Among the most evocative FAI places in Campania is Villa Cortchacow in Sorrento. Built in the late eighteenth century by the will of Leopoldo di Borbone, Count of Syracuse, this spectacular villa overlooking the Gulf of Naples is a true architectural jewel in the neo-Renaissance style with imposing halls, monumental stairways and rooms with panoramic sea views. The estate owes its name to the Russian princes Cortchacow who bought it in 1885. The famous trompe-l’oeil decoration of the hall floor bears the signature of Filippo Palizzi. The park surrounding the villa is also worth a visit: here Princess Cortchacow had numerous exotic botanical species planted, including a centuries-old cedar from Lebanon and some specimens of Ginko Biloba.
Centro Cerio, Capri
With its 20 thousand artifacts collected in four exhibition rooms, the Centro Caprense “Ignazio Cerio” represents a point of reference for the history of Capri. The museum, which overlooks the famous Piazzetta, houses the impressive archaeological, naturalistic and paleontological collections resulting from the reconnaissance that Ignazio Cerio carried out between the last decades of the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century. Important donations and exchanges with scholars from all over the world also fed the fund set up by Cerio. The Center, which in addition to the museum also includes a rich library, represents a stage of great cultural value to be included in an itinerary on the island of Capri.
Non-Catholic Cemetery, Capri
The last of the FAI places in Campania that we have included in our itinerary is the non-Catholic cemetery of Capri, a very special place, perhaps unusual for a holiday on the Amalfi Coast, but for this very reason interesting. It includes 204 graves of people from 21 nations. Different religions represented: here it is possible to find Anglican, Jewish and Orthodox burials. The cemetery was established in 1878 from an idea of the English George Hayward who was supported in the project by Edwin Cerio and other British and German artists and notables. The goal was to give burial to the many foreigners who came to Capri in the hope of treating tuberculosis with thalassotherapy. Among the personalities who rest in the non-Catholic cemetery of Capri include the writer Norman Douglas, the French baron Jacques Fersen and the English singer Gracie Fields.
